What are IP68 connectors

Paguro IP68 connectors are components to ensure water and dust resistant connections.

Robustness and ease of use

Electrical connectors are first and foremost designed to ensure perfect conduction continuity, thus reducing resistance and Joule losses.

Among these, there are some on the market that also focus on ease of use. Paguro connectors, in addition to all this, guarantee extremely high mechanical robustness. This feature ensures they pass the very stringent tests of the CEI EN 60998 standard. This standard requires that the cables connected to the connector are retained by it despite any tensile stress.
Furthermore, Paguro connectors can be directly buried or installed in critical environments, such as those near the sea.

Applications of IP68 Connectors

Thanks to their high protection against the ingress of dust and liquids, IP68 connectors are used in a wide range of applications and industrial sectors.

Prices and where to buy them

Choose your IP68 connector based on the number of outlets, cable outer diameter, and maximum number of conductors. You can purchase them in small quantities directly from www.lampadealled.it. If your system project requires the use of larger connectors, you can contact your local STEAB representative directly and ask for the nearest retailer.

What does the IP68 rating mean?

Classification of waterproof connectors

Watertight connectors used in systems subject to high environmental stress can be classified according to several criteria, including:

Cable type: Small, medium, and large connectors.
Number of pins: Varies based on the number of electrical contacts required for the application.
Mounting type: Parallel and series connections.
Number of directions: 2, 3, 4, up to 6 directions.

IP68 classification

IP classification is the acronym “IP” stands for “Ingress Protection.” It refers to an international protection scale (International Protection Rating or IEC standard 60529) and provides information on the degree of protection offered by a device against the ingress of solid objects and liquids. The acronym IP is followed by two numbers that indicate the level of protection offered by the connector: the first indicates protection against the ingress of solid objects and the second against the ingress of liquids. For example, a connector with an IP67 rating is protected from dust and temporary immersion in water up to 1 meter deep for 30 minutes.

For IP68 connectors, the first digit (6) indicates the level of protection against dust and solid particles: complete protection against dust ingress. The second digit (8) indicates the level of protection against liquid ingress: protection against continuous immersion in water over 1 meter deep for a period of time specified by the manufacturer; for Paguro IP68 connectors, 24 hours.

Certifications and regulations

To ensure compliance with IP68 protection requirements, connectors must undergo a series of tests and certifications in accordance with international regulations. The main reference standards are:

IEC EN 60529: International standard defining IP classifications and associated test methods.
Content IEC EN 60529: International standard defining IP classifications and associated test methods. CEI EN 60998-2-1: International standard defining the characteristics to which low-voltage connecting devices for household and similar purposes must comply.

Additionally, some IP68 connectors may comply with other specific regulations, depending on the application or industry. For example, connectors used in the military or aerospace sectors may be subject to additional standards.

Applications

Paguro IP68 connectors are widely used in a wide range of applications, including outdoor lighting systems, environmental sensors, and industrial and building control systems.

In particular, these connectors are particularly useful in demanding environments such as marine ones, where the presence of water and corrosive agents can compromise the long-lasting durability of equipment connections.

IP68 connectors and joints

Indispensable devices in the fields of electronics and industrial automation.

To ensure the effectiveness of the protection offered by the IP68 connector, it is important that it is installed and used correctly. In particular, it is necessary to carefully follow the manufacturer’s instructions for assembly and use of the connector to avoid damaging the waterproof seal and ensure maximum reliability in the transmission of electrical signals or data.
